SEO content plan

An SEO content plan is a short, dated document that says which questions you will answer, in what order, and how you will know whether it worked. This page is the method CaptainRoo uses on its own site: real keyword figures with their source, a reusable outline, and a draft you finish in your own words.

Step one: the keyword research

These are the actual figures behind this page, looked up in the Australian database on 20 September 2026 via Semrush. They are a snapshot, not a permanent truth — check them again before you rely on them.

Source: Semrush, Australian database, 20 September 2026. Where a figure is too small to report it is shown as unknown — never as zero.

Step two: the method

1. Write down the one question the page answers

Not a topic — a question a customer would type. A page that answers one question clearly beats a page that mentions five.

2. Look up real demand before you write

Check the search volume and difficulty for that exact phrase, in the country your customers live in. Australian demand is not American demand, and a low volume is a reason to write a short page, not a long one.

3. Record what you do not know

Missing volume means unknown, not zero. Low reported difficulty is evidence, never a promise of a ranking. Write the date beside every figure so the next person knows how old it is.

4. Outline before you draft

Title, opening answer, three to six sections, one honest limitations section, one next step. If a section does not help the reader decide something, cut it.

5. Draft in your own voice, from things you actually know

Every claim comes from your own data, your own process or a source you can link. If you cannot back a sentence, delete it rather than soften it.

6. Link it, publish it, then measure it

Link the new page from your navigation or footer, add it to your sitemap, and check impressions and clicks in Search Console after a few weeks. Rewrite the pages that get impressions but no clicks.

Step three: the outline you can reuse

  • H1 — the question, in plain wordsInclude the exact phrase once. No cleverness.
  • Opening answer (60–90 words)Answer the question immediately, before any preamble.
  • H2 — the method, numberedSteps a reader can carry out today, in order.
  • H2 — a worked exampleYour own figures, dated and sourced.
  • H2 — what this will not tell youName the limits. It builds more trust than another benefit.
  • H2 — the next stepOne call to action, and one alternative for people not ready.

Step four: the draft copy

A starting draft for the opening answer. Replace the bracketed parts with your own business, your own figures and your own period — do not publish it as it stands.

An SEO content plan is a short list of the questions your customers search for, the page that answers each one, and the date you will check whether it worked. At [business name] we keep ours to a single page: the phrase, the demand we measured, who the page is for, and the one action we want the reader to take. Over [period] that gave us [result you actually measured]. Here is the method we follow, step by step, so you can copy it without any tooling beyond a spreadsheet and your own search data.

What this plan will not do

  • It cannot promise a ranking. Low reported difficulty is evidence about competition, not a forecast for your site.
  • CaptainRoo does not publish pages to your website, test one headline against another, or look inside a competitor’s advertising account.
  • Keyword figures are a dated snapshot from a third-party tool. Where a figure is missing it stays unknown rather than being filled in.

Put the plan next to your numbers

Content earns its keep when you can see what it cost and what it returned. Import the report you already export, run an audit, and get findings with the evidence attached.
